ZDNet: Free at last… sort of

“As of January 1, one of the oldest “free” software projects
has become actually free enough to be discovered by the Linux
community… The program is Kermit,
possibly Columbia
University’s best-known contribution to the computer world. Its
latest release, introduced New Year’s Day, has a new license that
will finally allow Kermit to take its rightful place among the
pillars of free software.”

“Kermit (named after the Muppet, with permission) started out in
early 1981 as a file-transfer protocol designed to offer maximum
reliability and flexibility.”
