“Linus Torvalds kicked off the LinuxWorld trade show here
Wednesday with some surprising proclamations:
“Fragmentation of Linux is OK. Commercialism has been good for
Linux. The 2.4 Linux kernel is running just a bit behind
schedule.”
“Torvalds also distinguished between good and bad
fragmentation… Good fragmentation, on the other hand, makes it
possible for Linux to run in both supercomputers and refrigerators,
Torvalds said. “The key is modularity.”
“When I started Linux it wasn’t really a good product; it was
good technology, but commercial interests have been very important
in bringing that balance, in making it a good product as well.”
