“These days, the question isn’t if you use open source, but how
far you’ve gone with it. Open source, especially Linux, has gone
from a tech toy for engineers to a serious business choice. In the
MIS 100 survey conducted last year, MIS Asia found over one-third
of organisations surveyed had Linux installations. Educational
institutions and government departments still predominated as early
adopters, but it’s also starting to find favour in commercial
sectors such as banking.“Even Singapore’s Ministry of Defence recently admitted that
it’s jumping on the bandwagon. According to press reports, the
ministry has installed OpenOffice.org on 5,000 desktops so far and
aims to have it on 20,000 by end-March 2006…”
