“Solveig Haugland scoffs at those who believe that Microsoft
Office will rule forever. ‘OpenOffice.org and [Sun Microsystems
Inc.’s] StarOffice will become as widely used or more so than
Microsoft Office is now,’ she predicted in a recent interview with
SearchEnterpriseLinux.com. The two rivals to Microsoft Office will
win business users over with their lower cost, ample support and
ease of use, she said. Haugland isn’t just an open-source
enthusiast. She is an OpenOffice.org and StarOffice instructor and
author and a SearchEnterpriseLinux.com Ask the Expert advisor. She
is also co-author, with Floyd Jones, of three how-to books:
OpenOffice.Org 1.0 Resource Kit, StarOffice 5.2 Companion and
StarOffice 6.0 Office Suite Companion…

Are OpenOffice.org and StarOffice even making a dent in
the enterprise software space? Do they even have a chance in the
business market against Microsoft Office?

Haugland: There’s a lot of action going on now
internationally. The European Union is commissioning a study
regarding switching several governments to open-source. The U.S.
Defense Department and Scottish police are using StarOffice. Sun is
giving away StarOffice to many educational institutions; it’s
available to any educational institution for the cost of the
