“Linux continues to enjoy a meteoric rise in prominence as an
alternative on the server to both Unix and Windows NT. Last August,
researcher International Data Corp., Framingham, Mass., found that
13 percent of the corporations it surveyed used Linux in some
capacity. In a 1997 survey, Linux didn’t register at all.
Today, success or failure on the client is still up in the
air.“
“Moving beyond servers is important for VARs working with the
upstart operating system-if it is to become the mainstream system
that many claim it can be and the revenue source VARs want it to
be. But where the responsibility for that expansion lies is a
matter of contention: Is it up to the kernel development team,
distribution developers such as Red Hat Inc., Caldera Systems Inc.
and Macmillan USA, or third-party application developers?…”
“The answer appears to be a mix of the three.”
