“In January 2000, Check Point Software introduced a Linux port
of its flagship product, FireWall-1. FireWall-1 is one of the
best-selling products in the commercial firewall market. It now
runs on five operating systems including Linux. I was excited about
testing FireWall-1 for Linux because it is the first heavy-duty
security suite ported to the Linux environment.”
“FireWall-1 is also the most powerful commercial firewall
solution now available for the Linux platform. FireWall-1
isn’t the only well-known solution to move into the Linux camp.
AXENT Raptor Firewall for Linux is going to enter the market in the
third quarter of 2000 (along with a hardware appliance based on a
Cobalt microserver).”
“Naturally, the Linux version of FireWall-1 doesn’t differ
dramatically from, say, the Solaris version. It’s the same product
with the same tools, utilities, and technologies. FireWall-1 isn’t
the kind of software that just anyone can put on a workstation and
play around with, however. It’s a complicated, enterprise-class
application that would be a useless luxury on a little network with
dial-up or low-bandwidth Internet access.”
